Los Santos is a big city, but there’s the many miles of countryside outside of it, and of course an entire sea floor littered with collectibles. Where do you begin? In the start, sure, but where to start once that’s completed? There’s no wrong answer in GTA V. Research or less you’d like. Read on for some help getting a grasp on some of the game’s basic systems, and hopefully avoid some of those trial-and-error that accompanies learning them.
Grand Theft Auto 5 starts out with a prologue that introduces some of the story’s key characters. You are going to need to play through it all until you get to a point where you’re ready to explore Los Santos and the neighboring region. Remember that your ability to switch between multiple protagonists is restricted in the beginning. It is a good hour or two before you have got two characters to play with, and many hours more beyond that prior to the third joins the party. Overall, you’re likely considering 3-5 hours of mainlining the narrative if you want to hold off on exploring until all 3 personalities are in the combination.
The entire map is open and accessible to explore from the very first time you set foot in Los Santos. Your sole barrier is the in-game map, which is shrouded at the start at a”fog of war” that slowly reveals itself as you explore more and more of what is out there. For those that want to fill in some of the map prior to the story’s various assignments send you around, it is beneficial to keep useful the paper map of the region that ships with the game. It doesn’t show you everything, but it highlights a range of the major landmarks that are scattered across the world.
It wouldn’t be a GTA game in case you weren’t stealing tons and a lot of cars all the time. It is right there at the title, after all. You’ll find exactly the same varied mix of vehicles with wheels, with wings, and with rudders — roaming the roads that you did in past games. Maintaining cars which you have stolen is still an alternative, but it works a little differently in GTA V.
Each safehouse comes with a space where you are able to store a car or two, however each of those 3 personalities also has his own garage. Franklin, Michael, and Trevor-specific map icons are marked blue, green, and orange, respectively, and also this colour coding helps to recognize each of their garages. Drive or walk around one and press right on the D-pad when the prompt appears in order to enter it. Indoors, there’s enough space to get a small number of vehicles, at least 5 or six. There’s no real trick to getting off, you only need to be sensible. In the city proper, make use of alleyways and the empty spaces beneath raised roadways. The aqueduct might seem to be a good place to conceal, but you should be mindful that the fuzz will appear in there as well. You might also look to some body of water that’s deep enough that you dive beneath the surface of. You can not hold your breath forever, but swimming underwater is good cover for getting off.
Away from the town, you will mainly just want to prevent all roads. Generally speaking there’s a component of improvisation to vibration the heat. You’ve got to watch your minimap, see where cops are spawning, and travel in directions that steer you away from their eyesight cones. Cops tends to spawn on roads or in parking lots, so heading out into the open state is always a reliable bet for vibration any serious heat. You can also try taking to the skies, but you should be mindful that police choppers begin to spawn — at all altitudes — once you’re at three stars or greater.
Right to bear arms
It is not long until you build up a healthy arsenal of firepower in GTA V. Your guns stay with you once you have them on your stock, barring a small number of plot-specific minutes that restrict what you’ve got access to. Ammu-Nation continues to be the weapons supplier of choice in the GTA world, and they’re everywhere in Los Santos. Guns, gun mods, and ammo all cost money, with just one notable exclusion: Trevor is such a big deal up north of his Sandy Shores house that the local Ammu-Nation there gives him all of his guns at no cost. Ensure that you stock up as soon as you’ve got control of Trevor.
Also worth noting: you’re not faced with a one-or-the-other situation when you pick up multiple weapons of the identical kind (ie pistols, SMGs, assault rifles, etc.). Holding LB on an Xbox 360 controller brings up the radial weapon wheel. A screen in the middle of the wheel shows you that weapon you currently have selected together with a list of all mods currently fitted into this weapon.

The former ties directly to the events of the game, which means you will want to pay attention to what is going on — and watch LCD closely — when your activities in the narrative relate to some company or another. This is especially true for the assassination assignments that unlock roughly halfway through the narrative. Take note of everything you’re told in the pre- and post-mission briefings for all these assassinations, since your killing are meant to influence stock prices in 1 way or another.
Then there’s BAWSAQ, which is monitored on Rockstar Social Club influenced by the behaviour of the overall Grand Theft Auto 5 community. If a great deal of people are stealing one type of car or robbing one store in particular, the inventory on BAWSAQ related to it is going to fluctuate. Always keep in mind the basic rule of playing the stock market: buy low, sell high.
There are still other ways to make money outside that. If your minimap abruptly strobes white, watch for blue and/or red dots ; this is a sign that one of those energetic”citizen needing” minutes is happening. Occasionally it is a pickpocket, sometimes it is a gang shootout, and sometimes it’s only a random drunk couple looking for a ride. You can make some extra scratch by helping out these people… or not. Why yield the $2,000 you have only regained, to the woman over there when she’s going to take it all back and provide you a $200 reward? Why drive lone hitchhiker into his wedding when you can just as easily promote off him to some cannibalistic mountain cult that pays handsomely for new meat (true story)?
Strangers and Freaks
There’s more of a clear split between essential route missions and optional assignments in Grand Theft Auto 5 than there ever was before in the series. The Strangers and Freaks missions normally follow their particular plot thread; once you have met a specific character for the first time, all succeeding assignment markers in their narrative are identified on your minimap as an icon consisting of a question mark and the first letter of the mission-giver’s name.
When the character switch interface looks, you will usually observe a number over every character portrait. This number denotes the amount of assignments the character hasn’t yet begun; when there’s no quantity, there are no new assignments to be collected.
Skills and special abilities
Each playable character has his own set of ability bars concerning shooting capability, driving, flying, endurance, and the like. These skills all improve with repetition (ie the more you run, the greater your stamina rating gets), however there are different ways to improve them as well. Flight School offers an easy route to maxing out your flying skill — you will get there before you complete each of the challenges — and doing so cuts down on the quantity of turbulence that character adventures in flight. Visiting an Ammu-Nation shooting range, on the other hand, offers an opportunity to enhance your shooting. There’s normally a nominal fee for a whole lot of this stuff, but it is minor ($15 for a round at the shooting selection, by way of instance ).

Rather, Trevor goes into a rage mode that makes his weapons do more damage when reducing the damage he takes.
Each special ability serves a function in various situations. Franklin is obviously the wheel guy. Michael is best employed as a sniper, because his bullet-time capability makes scoring headshots at extreme ranges no difficulty in any way. Trevor is best saved for all round assaults, those moments when you really just need some nutjob with a shotgun to run in and clean a space out.
Materials you need to try
Now that you have got the basics down, here are a few specific things that you might want to test out, or at least keep in mind. Or some other hints that weren’t mentioned here? Please, by all means, talk about it in the comments below!
Head your airspace: Here’s a professional tip that should help everyone. The majority of us are likely going to need to jump in that blimp right away and fly all around. That is alright. It is a slow-moving beast, but it is a neat way to tour round the map. Keep 1 thing in mind however: restricted airspace isn’t your buddy. Be careful not to fly the blimp within the airport or the prison or the military base. It is a crap escape vehicle, being that it is a giant freaking balloon drifting in the sky.
Leaving on a jet plane: it’s possible to break into the military base and steal a fighter jet. The instant that you enter the restricted zone, your wanted level will spike up to four stars and tanks will roll out in force, and that means you have got to act quickly. The most reliable way to steal a jet that we’ve discovered: fill Trevor’s special meter, get a helicopter, and fly high, high over Fort Zancudo (if you’re large enough, you won’t trigger the alarms). Once that’s completed, skydive down into the foundation. You are aiming for the large open hangar that’s adjacent to the runway. There’s always a jet inside. Activate Trevor’s special as soon as you hit the ground and make a beeline for the jet. You’ve got enough acceleration that you should be able to remove as soon as you clean the hangar.
Channel your inner Jacques Cousteau: There’s a substantial chunk of property in Grand Theft Auto 5 at the base of the ocean. In addition to an assortment of optional assignment collectibles, you can frequently find weapons and armor discarded among the seaweed as well. Before you can explore, however, you’ll need scuba equipment. Roughly midway through the game you’ll have the ability to buy a company up north known as Sonar Collections. This provides you access to a submarine, and you’re automatically wearing a scuba tank when you bail out of it. You’ll also unlock a Strangers and Freaks assignment that provides you with access to some Zodiak vessel; like the sub, you’re scuba-equipped if you bond out of this one.
Build your empire: There’s another route to earning money that we didn’t get into over: heading legit. A number of companies available for sale are sprinkled across Los Santos. You’ll likely need to make some money from a couple of heists until you can begin buying up serious property, but doing so provides the character that owns the house — yes, ownership is character-specific — a weekly influx of money. You’ll also occasionally acquire optional assignments related to your owned companies that improve your earnings. Take note though: these are on a timer. Act quickly when you get the telephone or you will miss your opportunity.
Find all the items: The narrative in Grand Theft Auto 5 visits many places in Los Santos, but a lot of others are skipped over. You won’t stop by the prison or the military base. You won’t find any concerts at the city’s Hollywood Bowl knock-off, also you also won’t stink any bodies beneath the Vinewood sign. Ensure that you get out there and actually explore. There’s a lot of little tidbits hidden off. Can you locate the deserted hippie commune? The mountain fort of the Altruist Cult? Discover these and other areas, and keep them in mind.
Of course there are secrets. GTA games always have them. You are under no obligation to use them, and we will not judge you if you do. Take note, however: turning a cheat on deactivates GTA V’s save feature and simplifies Achievements/Trophies. These cheats will provide you different ways to enjoy the game, however they will not be helpful for unlocking anything.
